How to Boost Domestic Water Pressure

Throughout South Africa, water mains have typically had their pressure reduced, the two key reasons for this are expanding development, as more and more areas are developed, the water mains previously installed cannot keep up with demand, the other reason is that water mains have had their pressure reduced deliberately to combat leaks. This undoubtedly causes considerable frustration for many, particularly during peak times. You can however boost your water pressure with a water pressure pump.

Can I attach water pressure pumps directly to my incoming mains?

No. Fitting a pump directly to the main is not possible for two reasons:

  • Water by-laws specifically exempt you from installing any pump to your incoming main.
  • Water pressure pumps are not designed to ‘suck’ water only to push it and thus if the existing supply is inadequate then the pump will be starved of water and provide very little benefit. The pump will not be operating efficiently and be liable to fail prematurely.

How can I improve my water pressure ?

A tank needs to be installed as reservoir, a pump can then draw water from this. Our technicians who will carry out an on-site inspection and quote on the appropriate size that will accommodate your needs. Ideally tanks should be located as low down and as close to your incoming water source as possible, the less gravity the incoming water has to overcome, the faster the tank will refill. We recommend a larger tank than what is required, as this reduces the risk running out of water.
